Phone Case MOQ Explained: What 50 Pieces Per Style Actually Means

5 October 2026

"MOQ 50 pieces" sounds like an arbitrary number invented by a salesperson. It is not. Behind it there is a real constraint, and once you understand the constraint you can structure an order that works for both sides instead of arguing about the number.

Where the number comes from

A phone case is injection moulded, printed or sprayed, and then packed. Of those steps, two have real setup costs:

So a minimum order per style is really a minimum order per setup. That is why MOQ is always quoted per style and per colour, never per order.

Why mixing styles is usually free — and mixing colours sometimes is not

If the colour already exists in the factory's library, adding it to your order costs nothing extra: the colour is already in the machine and the pieces are simply counted together. If the colour is new, it has to be matched and mixed, and that is a separate minimum.

This is the practical reason to start with the factory's existing colour range. In our case there are around 52 colours already in the library. Choosing from those means no colour minimum, no matching delay, and a faster first order. Ask any supplier how many colours they hold in stock — the answer tells you how much freedom you really have at low volume.

How to structure a first order

StageWhat to order
Test the supplier1–5 pieces of 3–5 styles. Pay unit price. Check colour accuracy, packing quality and how fast they answer.
Test your market50–100 pieces per style across 5–10 styles. Enough to fill a listing, photograph properly and see which models move.
Scale the winners300–1,000 pieces per style on the models that sold. This is where the volume discount starts to matter.
Commit2,000+ pieces per style once you know the demand. Payment terms usually improve at this point too.

The mistake buyers make at low volume

Spreading 500 pieces across 40 styles to "test everything" produces forty listings with twelve pieces each, no colour depth, and nothing that sells. Fifty pieces in one colour of one style outsells twelve pieces in four colours almost every time, because a buyer who likes the model wants a choice of colour.

Depth beats breadth at the start. Pick fewer models, go deeper on colour.

What to ask before you accept a quoted MOQ

  1. Is the MOQ per style, per colour, or per order?
  2. How many colours do you already hold, and which ones?
  3. What is the minimum for a new colour?
  4. What is the minimum for a new mould (a phone model you do not currently make)?
  5. Is there a surcharge for mixing styles and colours within one order?

If a supplier cannot answer those five questions quickly, they are probably not the ones running the machine.

Start small, then scale. Tell us which models you want to test and we will quote a first order at MOQ — no account, no registration wall.
